When Do You Need A Tooth Extraction?

Sometimes, the teeth can suffer damage due to an accident or an illness. Whether because of physical trauma or a decaying disease, the tooth may need to be extracted to protect the overall health of the mouth. At the office of Dr. Justin Raanan, we take tooth extraction matters very seriously.

During the tooth extraction process, your tooth will need to be removed from its socket completely. This is the best course of action when a tooth can no longer function the way it is meant to, and it can cause health hazards for the rest of the mouth.

Not all cases of damage require complete extraction, however. Take a look at the article below to find out when you need a tooth extraction or a different procedure.

Reasons For A Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth need to be removed in most adults, but this is a standard procedure. In the event that an extraneous extraction needs to be made, there are other circumstances that may have caused this pain.

If you are dealing with pain or breakage, you may need a tooth extraction. Some of the most common reasons why you may need to get your teeth extracted include:

  • Tooth infections
  • Excessive decay
  • Too much tooth crowding in one area
  • Physical breakage or shattering after trauma
  • Preventative measures before surgery or chemotherapy
  • Removing baby teeth that have not fallen out on their own
  • Room needs to be made in the mouth for braces
  • Excessive bleeding in the gums

The tooth extraction procedure is fairly quick and can be done on an outpatient basis. Healthline recommends either local or intravenous anesthesia for the procedure, depending on the severity of the pain and the extraction needs.

How The Procedure Works

At the office of Dr. Justin Raanan, we save the tooth extraction process for when a tooth needs to be completely taken out of its socket. When you are faced with irreparable damage, this treatment will be recommended.

There are several different types of tooth extraction procedures that our dental staff will advise based on the type of damage. We offer surgical extraction for cases where part or all of the tooth has been hidden in the gums. This can happen when the patient waits too long to have the tooth extracted. In the meantime, the teeth can crack and break off, leaving the remains to get buried under the gums. This requires anesthesia and may elongate recovery time.

simple extraction is a more common type of tooth extraction offered by Dr. Raanan. This procedure is recommended when most of the tooth is still visible in the mouth. Only local anesthesia is required to numb the gums, and the doctor can quickly remove the teeth from there.

There is not much pain associated with the procedure. Afterward, there might be some pain expected. Dr. Raanan will prescribe pain medication if necessary. In most cases, the pain wears off after 24 hours and the healing process can begin.

Please note that it is not recommended for pregnant patients to have a tooth extraction.
